Online Roundtable

On 21 June 2003, the European Union (EU) has given unequivocal support to a European perspective to the Western Balkan countries. Twenty years later, this perspective seems far less certain. European integration of the Western Balkans is taking place in a context of mounting illiberalism, dependencies on external actors, and growing instability across the region. It is also taking place in a new geopolitical context, which is reshaping Europe’s role in its neighbourhood, and possibly re-designing the setup of the Union itself.

In this panel, we gather experts from the region and beyond, to take stock of the twenty years of EU integration in the Western Balkans and reflect on the future prospects and the European perspective of the region.

Panellists:

  • Klodiana Beshku, University Tirana
  • Dan Ilazi, Kosovar Centre for Security Studies, Pristina
  • Simonida Kacarska, European Policy Institute, Skopje
  • Sören Keil, Institute of Federalism, University of Fribourg
  • Milena Lazarević, European Policy Centre, Belgrade
  • Senada Šelo Sabić, Institute for Development and International Relations, Zagreb
