The university has officially stood by its students, who since November 2024 have been engaged in strike actions calling for transparency and political accountability from the government in the wake of the deadly accident in Novi Sad, in which 16 people lost their lives following the collapse of the canopy at the newly renovated railway station.
Despite institutional and personal reprisals, the university and its staff support the students in exercising their constitutional rights to freedom of assembly and to peaceful protest. The students are mobilising around core democratic values, including political accountability and the rule of law.
The police raid on the rector’s office on the 31 of March 2026 without prior notification or the rector’s consent by units of the Criminal Police Directorate and the confiscation of equipment and documents, constitutes a breach of the principles of institutional autonomy. The official justification given by the Criminal Police was an investigation into the death of a student some days prior. From the outset, the university has offered its full cooperation in solving that case.
Andrássy University Budapest (AUB) is deeply concerned about the ongoing developments, in particular the violation of university autonomy and the ongoing pressure on the university’s leadership and its entire academic community. AUB will maintain its partnership with the Faculty of Political Science at the University of Belgrade and will continue its ongoing cooperation projects. AUB reaffirms its commitment to academic freedom and expresses its solidarity with the University of Belgrade.
